Under The Moon's Eye

 April 19 - May 24, 2025

Join us at Ivester Contemporary for Under The Moon’s Eye, a solo exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by Austin-based artist Sydney Guzman.

From Ivester Contemporary: “Under The Moon’s Eye unfolds like a visual diary. It is a body of work shaped by observation, instinct, and the artist’s evolving relationship with the natural world. Guzman’s expressive paintings are rendered in quick, gestural brushstrokes and shifting densities. Sculpture adds material presence to the show’s themes of transformation, creating forms that hover between memory and embodiment.

The work emerges from what Guzman describes as a conversation with the universe. “In moments of uncertainty, I pose a silent question,” she writes. “And the world responds, not with words, but through intuitive signs: an animal crossing my path, an object pulling my attention, a subtle shift in energy.” This intuitive exchange, between self and world, surrender and control, runs through the exhibition. Animals appear as guides or companions: a fox mid-leap, a cat resting, a coyote in transition. These figures echo the shifting gestures of Guzman’s own hand, mirroring the internal states of the artist as she moves between openness and protection, lightness and weight. Sydney Guzman (b.1997, McAllen, TX) earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in the spring of 2023, following her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas State University in 2021. Guzman’s work has been exhibited nationally in museums and galleries, including The Peale Museum in Baltimore, MD, Spellerberg Projects in Lockhart, TX, and Ivester Contemporary in Austin, TX. Guzman is currently based in Austin and she is a lecturer in The School of Art and Design at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX.”
